With a heavy heart we share sad news. Our dear friend, Steven Edwards, passed away on Wednesday morning the 22nd of April. The cancer spread quickly taking Steve long before his time. A supporter of Tŷ Tawe, member of the Welsh community in Swansea and beloved friend to many, his departure is a great loss.

Originally from Manchester, Steve first learnt Welsh in Tŷ Tawe before becoming a tutor in the language. More recently, after retiring from his work as a Philosophy Professor in Swansea University, he began volunteering in Siop Tŷ Tawe and teaching once again for Learn Welsh Swansea Bay Region. His face became familiar to many more as he worked behind the counter and in the Siop Siarad in his patient, caring manner. Not one to boast, Steve was nevertheless a man of many talents – a punk musician in 1980s Manchester and an academic expert in medical ethics. Embodied in his love of Welsh was his understanding of J. R. Jones’ philosophy and appreciation of Kate Roberts’ literature. But we will remember him above all as the dear, kind man that he was, always ready to listen and offer his help. Let us remember Steve and his qualities all the more in these trying times. Eventually opening the doors to Tŷ Tawe once again will be a hard task without his happy company.

Our thoughts are with his wife Jane and family in this difficult time. Cysga’n dawel Steve.
