Your Welsh is Wonderful!

Morriston

Due to the success of the ‘Your Welsh is Wonderful course last year in Clydach a second course began this year in Moriston. This time the Group have been lucky to receive the help and support of Catrin Jones, the new head of Tan y Lan School in Moriston, who encouraged the parents to come together.
The 10 week course encourages local parents to come together and practice their Welsh skills. Eight parents participate regularly.
The course started with a simple Welsh quiz, a cake decorating workshop, making gift bags and Christmas and birthday card making.
Since the beginning of the course two of the parents have gone on to assist in the morning pre-school sessions at Ysgol Tan y Lan because their Welsh skills and confidence have increased.

Recently a socialising session was held in a pub in Moriston. Many of the members bought their children along. It was a lovely opportunity for the parents and their children to socialise through the medium of Welsh.

Pilot Project

‘Your Welsh is wonderful!’ is a pilot project which has taken place over the last few months areas across Wales. The project encourages those able to speak Welsh to use the language socially with the long term aim of changing the habits of parents who can speak Welsh but are used to speaking English to each other.

Menter Iaith Abertawe, in partnership with TWF, arranged 10 sessions at YGG Gellionnen to practise using Welsh during craft activities - from making cards to flower arranging, glass painting, folk singing, hand massage and jewellery. Shelley Rees of Menter Iaith Abertawe, who lead the scheme with TWF, said “One parent had not considered speaking Welsh with their baby until they joined the scheme because English was the language of the home, even though she had received Welsh medium education.”

The sessions are now held at “Fresh 2 Lips” cafe in Clydach every Thursday morning, and any new members are welcome to join the group. It was an opportunity to make new friends and increase the individuals’ confidence to look for more Welsh medium events and join in activities with Welsh speaking families.
